Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system. Ubuntu claims that it will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates. Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from
Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world. This web server now runs on it. The content was migrated from a FreeBSD server, of which I am a HUGE fan and have been since version 3.

Linux. The word does not yet appear on the merriam-webster website, although there are advertisements for it, I guess since UNIX is not in there either that makes it ok? Interestingly, according to
Netcraft they use Red Hat Linux. And everywhere I have worked since 1994 there has been at least one, to many thousand Linux powered machines. If you have ever read the infamous
Halloween documents you know Linux is a big deal, kind of like computers, and probably should be the in their dictionary.

I love FreeBSD. I once had a VERY BUSY FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE server that had an uptime of well over 3 years before it was retired. The fact is that hardware should have been retired a couple years before I installed FreeBSD on it. I run 7.1 on my laptop with KDE.
qmail
I love qmail. I have been using it since 1995.
qmail2cyrus is a bit of code I contributed that delivers email from qmail to
Cyrus IMAP
mailstore. If you are interested I keep a copy of the thread
here.
qmail has a
cash guarantee
if you report a verifiable security hole. Nobody has ever claimed this prize.
DJBDNS
I love DJBDNS. I have been using it since 1995.

A Patchy WebServer
I love Apache. I have been using it since 1995. I have tried
lighttpd pronounced lighty
but Apache has so much more.
PHP
I love PHP. I have been using it since 1995, right along with Apache and PHP.
I have built countless sites with Apache/PHP or installed software powered by Apache/PHP.
MySQL
I love MySQL I have been using it since 1995. I have built countless sites with MySQL/PHP or installed software powered by PHP.
I prefer InnoDB but by far the most popular has been MyISAM but you may also use MySQL has six distinct table types.
But it supports MERGE, ISAM, HEAP, BDB or BerkeleyDB Tables.
Sniff my Packets
I love CLEARTEXT or PLAINTEXT - not. I have been using tools that do not transmit my packets in CLEARTEXT ever.
Here is a list of nifty tools that even a monkey could use to read your email, see what websites you visit,
get your logons and passwords if you use some of the most popular Internet protocols such as Telnet, FTP, POP3, IMAP, AXFR the list goes on. You feel secure on your switched network?
4G8 or Forge Gate should make you nervous. This scary thing didn't even make
this list.
The Apache SpamAssassin Project.
Until IM2000 happens, or simply placing the responsibility on the sender, instead of the recipient, SPAM it here to stay.
Personally, I think there is too much money allegedly preventing SPAM to make IM2000 a reality and of course there is all that money to be made sending SPAM.
TMDA, SPF, blacklisting, greylisting is all a joke (no offense to the people who are trying hard to stop this SPAM menace). It is all at best is a band-aid on a bullet hole.
Computer repair, secure wireless setup, Enterprise and home networking, home data backup solutions.
I work on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Website creation and consulting and much more.
I, Rick Updegrove have been interested in, repairing, programming, administering, all types of
computers since 1995. I am always looking for a challenging project, even if the project is small
to me and a large challenge to you, I feel a sense of satisfaction of just solving a problem.
Although I have always used Windows, and before that DOS, I am especially interested in Free, Open Source software.
After following so many projects that started as poorly documented, somewhat buggy software and operating systems,
which are now running Fortune 500 Companies I sometimes wonder why it didn't happen sooner. I made the switch over a decade ago. Maybe you can too?
While I purchased my first 100MHZ Pentium P54C in 1995 computers were in my house and my life lot earlier than that.
My father had an IBM 5150 with dual floppies (no hard drives in those days). My friends had Apple IIEs and Comodore 64s.
I even still have a fully functional 286 with a 10 megabyte hard drive and 512K memory. It has games like Zaxxon, Defender,
Leisure Suite Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards... to many to list,
all on a 10 meg hard drive now I can barely get by with my 8 gigabyte microsd card in my phone.
